WHAT IS PLAGIOCEPHALY?
- A flat spot on a baby’s head.
- Plagiocephaly develops when a baby spends too much time lying on its back. It does not cause brain damage or interfere with the baby’s development.
- However, it may be more noticeable when looking at a baby’s head from above. This is because the cheekbone and ear on the flat side may be pushed forward.
- Changing the position of the baby’s head can help. However, a moulded helmet may be required if it doesn’t improve by four months.

TREATMENT by Cranial Technology
The best way to treat plagiocephaly is to vary your baby’s position. You can do this while the baby is asleep or awake.
Over time, the change in position distributes pressure more evenly over the baby’s entire head and strengthens the neck muscles. Should:
- Change your baby’s sleep position often. Alternate the direction your child lies in the crib. Light and activity attract attention, so babies turn toward windows or the centre of rooms.
- If you place your baby’s head at the top of the crib one night and at the bottom the next, your baby will look different each time.
- Alteration the position of your baby’s head while he sleeps. For example, gently move your baby’s head to the side that is not flattering while your baby is sleeping.
- Hold your baby frequently to limit the time he spends propped up on a flat surface. Next, cradle and feed your baby in different positions, switching arms from time to time. Finally, let your baby lie on your chest.
- Provide plenty of supervised “tummy time” while the baby is awake. Tummy time improves flat head syndrome and strengthens your baby’s neck, arms, and back.
